First Anniversary Gifts for a Long Distance Boyfriend or Girlfriend
Share
The short answer: the best first anniversary gift for a long distance partner is something that makes the distance feel smaller. Either it is something you share, like a playlist or a set of letters, or it holds both of your places, like a poster of your two cities. Below are ideas for different budgets, and how to choose.
Why the first year apart needs a different kind of gift
A first anniversary is already a big moment. When you cannot celebrate in the same room, a generic gift can feel like an apology for the distance. The gifts that land are specific to the two of you: a place, a date, an inside joke. Aim for something your partner will see every day, or something you can open together on a video call.
From my own two years of long distance
My partner and I did two years apart before she moved to the Netherlands. A few things worked for us. We marked every anniversary with something special, even from far away. We surprised each other. And we always had a plan for the next time we would see each other, because it gave us something to look forward to. Planning it together was half the fun.
That is also why I like gifts that point forward as well as back.
Ideas that fit the distance
- A shared playlist with a story. Add one song for each month of the year and write one line about why. Free, and it gets better every time they listen.
- A box of letters to open on set dates. Write twelve short notes, one per month you have been together, and number the envelopes.
- A care package from your city. A snack from the corner shop you always mention, a small local souvenir, a street map with your favourite spots marked.
- A date night, delivered. Order the same meal for both of you to arrive at the same hour, then eat together on video.
- A photo book of the year. Screenshots of calls, tickets from visits, the first photo you ever sent each other.
- Plan your next visit together. Make the plan part of the gift: pick the place, the first meal, one thing you have never done together. Planning it as a pair turns the anniversary into something you both look forward to.
- A poster of your two cities. A Two City Poster Set puts the city you live in and the city they live in side by side, with the landmarks that mean something to you. It is a gift they can hang up and see every day, and you see a free digital preview before you decide anything.
- A skyline canvas for the long term. If you are planning to close the distance, a custom skyline canvas blends both of your cities into one artwork for the home you will share.
How to choose
By budget. A playlist, letters or a planned visit cost nothing but time. A care package or a delivered date night sits in the middle. A poster set or canvas is the one to pick when you want something that lasts beyond the anniversary.
By distance. If you will see each other soon, bring something small and save the big gift for in person. If it will be months, send something that arrives and stays visible, like a poster.
By personality. Sentimental partner: letters or a photo book. Practical partner: something for their desk or wall. Both: the poster.

Frequently asked questions
What do you give a long distance partner for a first anniversary?
Choose something that is specific to the two of you and that stays with them: a playlist, a set of letters, a plan for your next visit, or a poster of your two cities.
Is a poster a good long distance anniversary gift?
Yes, if it shows places that matter to the two of you. Because it hangs on the wall, it is a daily reminder rather than a one day gift.
Can I see the artwork before I buy?
Yes. Tell us your two cities and you receive a free digital preview first.
Ready to start?
Tell us your two cities and we will make a free digital preview. See the Two City Poster Set or see the Two City Skyline Canvas.
